A bit of fun for hardline fans of Nero and Archie.Ken Darby could have run around from case to case pointing a finger and saying, See Stout made a mistake here he says this, and there he contradicts himself as many have done with regard to Christie s novels and stories He decided to have a littlefun than that Published in 1983, the book purports to be written by Archie Goodwin from his retirement on Lily Rowan s ranch in Montana Wolfe is now retired, living in Egypt, so the tale ca A bit of fun for hardline fans of Nero and Archie.Ken Darby could have run around from case to case pointing a finger and saying, See Stout made a mistake here he says this, and there he contradicts himself as many have done with regard to Christie s novels and stories He decided to have a littlefun than that Published in 1983, the book purports to be written by Archie Goodwin from his retirement on Lily Rowan s ranch in Montana Wolfe is now retired, living in Egypt, so the tale can be told The book includes floorplans, explanations, bibliography, and other tidbits These days it s a collector s item, so find it in a library if you can.Unfortunately, what cost it a star really a star and a half are the things it leaves out, and one thing it puts in, both in the chapter on The Man Himself Not one mention is made of Wolfe s past as it can be gleaned from the books his daughter the driving force behind the novel The Black Mountain , the mother that is mentioned in at least two stories with conflicting details about where she lives etc , the mysterious wife that tried to kill Wolfe at some point all women, and all vital to the development of the man who would become Nero Wolfe For that matter, not a mention of Wolfe being from Montenegro how he came to the US when he became a citizen the time he had to get fit to serve in his own peculiar capacity in WW2 Nada Not a word Ok, all of that is nothing to do with the house itself, but there s a lot in the book that fits in that category not least the exhaustive details of where to find Lily s ranch And then there s what was inserted by the author in the Wolfe chapter, with no provocation that I can make out, which is a pages long rant on the change in the modern usage of the word gay This bit of soapboxing purports to be drawn from a letter written by Wolfe to Archie and Lily in 1978 which is to say, three years after Stout s death. There s no real point to this insertion other than to air Darby s apparent personal issues, as there is not a single footnote from Stout s writings, published or unpublished, to make us think that this exercise is founded on anything he might have said in an interview or written about Readers of my reviews know how I feel about follow on fiction those modern authors who apparently can t come up with plots of their own without using the characters and situations created by deceased authors However paltry productions such as Elinor Marianne may turn out when compared with their originals, no one until now at least that I m aware of has tried to stuff words, opinions and positions on contemporary topics into the mouth of a vintage character and by extension, that character s creator in quite such a summary fashion Particularlythattopic As Wolfe would say, I took umbrage

I had a hard time getting through this one Mr Darby is a knowledgeable man and a fellow fan of Nero Wolfe, but I have a few gripes.1 He s taking a big liberty by marrying off Archie Goodwin and Lily Rowan Maybe it was going to happen, but having them making mushy sugar all over the place while Archie supposedly tells us how the Brownstone really was and where it supposedly really was is well off putting for me Maybe they are in their dotage at this time 2 If you are going to assert I had a hard time getting through this one Mr Darby is a knowledgeable man and a fellow fan of Nero Wolfe, but I have a few gripes.1 He s taking a big liberty by marrying off Archie Goodwin and Lily Rowan Maybe it was going to happen, but having them making mushy sugar all over the place while Archie supposedly tells us how the Brownstone really was and where it supposedly really was is well off putting for me Maybe they are in their dotage at this time 2 If you are going to assert that the house was not on 35th street, why label the figures as if it is I m also not buying that it would be where Mr Darby says it was That s too rich a place for a person like Pete Drossos to live on that block Yeah, it s probably not on 35th street But I don t think it was up in a ritzy neighborhood I can see how Wolfe would want to be somewhat near people close to his heritage in background and he d certainly enjoy being the biggest fish in the neighborhood.3 What the heck is this letter from Wolfe in the tenth chapter Pfui 4 Does anyone really believe that Wolfe would leave New York City and go off to retire and live in Egypt I, for one, don t Yes, he owns a house there But he s celebrated in New York He has access to so much there I may be presuming a lot upon myself to say this, but nothan the esteemed Mr Darby We all have our opinions and in these points, we differ Ah well Now, having said these things, I must congratulate Mr Darby on his detailed and lovely drawings of the fictional residence They are extremely well done Wherever it was, fictional or no, this is the way it was set up inside With one problem.5 In the office, we are told, over and over in the books that the yellow couch is in the corner In the far corner Mr Darby has placed it in A corner, kind of He s doing the best he can, but I think he has placed it wrongly Again, who can have a final say in this Probably not me It just bugs me So, great job on the diagrams Rather iffy with the presumptions on the state of the cast

The majority of the work consists of supporting quotes from the stories, but the original writing is entertaining and covers all of the material nicely.

In this book, Archie Goodwin takes us through the old brownstone on West 35th Or was it really East 35th He shows us in detail through each floor, describing all of the things that might be important to a Nero Wolfe fan and explaining many of the supposed contradictions in the stories throughout the years He also spends a chapter on the family and one on the big man himself.I am not generally a reader of non fiction, especially non fiction about fiction However The Brownstone House of In this book, Archie Goodwin takes us through the old brownstone on West 35th Or was it really East 35th He shows us in detail through each floor, describing all of the things that might be important to a Nero Wolfe fan and explaining many of the supposed contradictions in the stories throughout the years He also spends a chapter on the family and one on the big man himself.I am not generally a reader of non fiction, especially non fiction about fiction However The Brownstone House of Nero Wolfe was a quick and delightful read It is out of print now and the cheapest that I saw it for online used was for 70 So I ended up reading my local library s only copy Maybe someday it will be reprinted If so, I certainly will purchase a copy for reference
